The best AI apps for NEET UG preparation, honestly compared

Almost every NEET app now claims AI. Very few will tell you what the AI actually is.

Lumi Team11 min read

There is no single best AI for NEET preparation. The right tool depends on the job: a coaching app if you need live classes, the NTA's free National Test Abhyas for past-paper practice, a general chatbot or an in-app AI tutor for doubts at night, and a scheduler-and-diagnosis app if you need to know what to revise today and why you lost marks. Judge any of them by one question: which method decides what I see next, and where can I read about it?

The useful way to compare NEET apps is not by who says 'AI' loudest, but by who will tell you what the AI does. In a September 2026 survey of 474 apps on the Indian App Store, 67 described themselves with 'AI-powered', 'AI-based' or 'artificial intelligence'. Not one of them named the method behind their scoring or scheduling.

That is the gap this comparison is about. What follows is factual and checkable, and it ends with what Lumi does: a named, published method, for NEET UG and JEE.

How we compared them

Every claim below comes from Apple's public App Store API for the Indian storefront: release dates, rating counts and the developers' own descriptions. Release dates in that data are set by Apple, not editable by the developer, which makes them a reliable way to check who actually shipped first.

Every figure below is as of 9 September 2026 and will drift as apps collect ratings. We did not rank apps by quality. Judging whether a competitor's content is good is subjective and self-serving when we sell a competing product. What can be checked without judgement is what each app claims about its own method, so that is what we checked.

The apps that were doing this before the AI wave

  • MemoNeet, released March 2023, is a NEET-specific revision app built on forgetting-curve scheduling with 123 ratings. It predates most apps now marketing themselves as AI-first for this exam.
  • Embibe, released May 2021 by Indiavidual Learning Limited, has been marketing adaptive practice and AI for longer than most of the apps now claiming it have existed.
  • Unacademy, released February 2018, has the largest install base of the group at over 54,000 ratings.
  • National Test Abhyas, released August 2020, is the NTA's own free practice app. For pure past-paper practice at zero cost, it is hard to argue against.
  • Physics Wallah, released December 2022, is the volume leader among the coaching apps with over 15,000 ratings.

Where the AI claims stop

The pattern in the data is consistent. Large apps describe outcomes, such as personalised learning and adaptive practice, without describing mechanism. Zero of the 474 apps surveyed mention Item Response Theory, the standard psychometric method for estimating ability from responses. Zero mention knowledge tracing. Zero mention Elo or Rasch.

Eight mention FSRS, the open spaced-repetition scheduler, and none of those eight is a NEET UG app. The closest is Floww, which markets FSRS for NEET PG, a different exam sat by medical graduates rather than school students.

This is not an accusation that anyone is lying. Adaptive practice can be real without being named. But as a student, an unnamed method is one you cannot evaluate, compare, or hold anyone to.

What each kind of tool is built for

Coaching apps such as Physics Wallah, Allen and Aakash are built around live classes with a teacher. The NTA's own National Test Abhyas is a free practice-test app. General chatbots answer doubts. Lumi is built to decide what you study next and to tell you why, for NEET UG and JEE, and it surrounds that engine with free material to learn from.

  • An adaptive engine with named methods: FSRS, 2PL Item Response Theory and simpleKT over over 12,000 NEET concept atoms.
  • A 24x7 AI tutor inside the app, so doubts and revision live in one place.
  • Free on lumineet.com: NCERT notes and doubts pages for all 79 NEET chapters, a question bank of 780 verified NEET questions with full solutions, and interactive lessons for NEET and JEE, including Maths, with simulations and curated video classes.

What Lumi does differently

We name the algorithms. Revision scheduling uses FSRS at a desired retention of 0.9, the same open scheduler modern Anki uses, running the reference implementation rather than an interval heuristic of our own. Ability estimation uses a two-parameter logistic Item Response Theory model fitted by maximum likelihood. Question selection inside an adaptive exam picks the item with the highest Fisher information at your current ability estimate, and across a study plan a simpleKT knowledge-tracing transformer predicts which concepts you would get right now.

You do not have to take our word for any of that, which is the entire point of naming it. The methodology is published and the claims can be argued with.

The one question worth asking any NEET app

Which algorithm decides what I see next, and where can I read about it? A product that has a real answer will give you one. A product that answers with 'our AI' has told you nothing you can check.

That question costs you nothing and filters faster than any feature comparison table, including this one.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best AI app for NEET preparation?

The apps optimise for different things. Physics Wallah, Allen and Aakash run live coaching at scale, and the NTA's own National Test Abhyas offers free practice tests. Lumi covers NEET UG and JEE with scheduling and diagnosis built on named, published algorithms (FSRS, 2PL IRT and simpleKT), a 24x7 AI tutor, and free notes, lessons and questions on lumineet.com. The more useful question than 'which is best' is 'which one will tell me what its AI actually does'.

Do AI apps actually help with NEET, or is it marketing?

Both, depending on the app. Spaced repetition and adaptive testing have decades of published research behind them and genuinely work. But 'AI-powered' as a phrase is unregulated and unfalsifiable. In a September 2026 census of 474 India App Store listings, 67 used AI language and none named the method underneath. Treat the named methods as evidence and the unnamed ones as advertising.

Which NEET app was the first to use AI?

Several companies now advertise being 'first' for this exam, and App Store release dates contradict most of those claims: Embibe was marketing AI-driven adaptive practice from 2021, and MemoNeet shipped forgetting-curve revision for NEET in March 2023. Who came first matters less than what the method is. Lumi names its methods (FSRS, 2PL Item Response Theory and simpleKT) and explains them on its How it works page.

Is a paid NEET app worth it over free resources?

Only if it does something free resources cannot. NCERT plus past papers plus disciplined self-testing is a complete preparation on its own, and many toppers use nothing else. What a paid tool can add is scheduling and diagnosis: deciding what to review today and telling you why a mark was lost. If an app does not do those two things, free resources are the better value.

Is there a free AI for NEET preparation?

Yes, several, each covering one part of the job. General chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini have free tiers that answer doubts, though you must check their facts against NCERT. The NTA's National Test Abhyas app is free for practice tests. Lumi has a free plan in its app, and lumineet.com has free NCERT notes, doubts pages and interactive lessons for NEET and JEE, plus a NEET question bank with full answers for the first five questions on the site before the rest continue in the app.

What is an AI tutor for NEET, and is it enough on its own?

An AI tutor is a chat assistant that explains a question or concept step by step when you ask, at any hour. Lumi's app includes one, and so do several other NEET apps. It is useful for doubts, but it does not decide what you should revise or track what you are forgetting, so treat it as a teacher on call rather than a study plan.

Which online NEET course has AI progress tracking?

Many claim it, so ask each one how progress is measured. A percentage of questions answered correctly changes with how hard the questions were; an ability estimate from Item Response Theory accounts for difficulty. Lumi tracks ability per subject with a two-parameter IRT model and schedules review with FSRS, and both are described on its How it works page. Embibe has also marketed adaptive practice for several years.

Is there an AI app for NEET PG or for MBBS students?

Lumi covers NEET UG and JEE; it does not cover NEET PG or the MBBS curriculum. Some apps market FSRS-based revision for NEET PG; Floww is one. Judge them with the same question: which method decides what you see next, and where is it written down?
