Propene is treated with HCl in the presence of benzoyl peroxide. Judge the Assertion (A) and the Reason (R) below.

  • Assertion (A): The product is 2-chloropropane, the Markovnikov product, even though peroxide is present.
  • Reason (R): The H–Cl bond is too strong to be split by the free radicals formed from the peroxide, so no radical chain starts.
