What coaching offers

  • A daily timetable set by the institute.
  • Live teachers you can question face to face.
  • The Class 11 and 12 syllabus taught from the beginning.
  • A peer group at the same stage, with regular ranked tests.
  • In exchange: fees, and the travel or relocation a centre may need.

What self-study offers

  • Control over your own schedule and pace.
  • Hours spent on your specific gaps (a few chapters, one subject) instead of full-syllabus classes.
  • No coaching fees, travel time or relocation.
  • For repeaters who have already been taught, more time for practice and revision.
  • It needs a reliable way to get doubts answered: a teacher, a senior, or a good explanation source.

What Lumi gives you

  • An ability estimate from 2PL Item Response Theory and mastery tracking with simpleKT across over 12,000 NEET concept atoms.
  • A 24x7 AI tutor in the app for doubts, plus adaptive exams and custom tests by topic and difficulty.
  • Free on lumineet.com: NCERT notes and doubts pages for all 79 NEET chapters, 780 verified NEET questions with full solutions, and interactive lessons with simulations for NEET and JEE, including Maths.
  • On iOS and Android, with a free plan and paid monthly plans; current plans are in the app.

Does coaching or self-study get better results?

We could not find any NTA or NMC data that compares NEET results by whether a candidate took coaching, and NTA's result press release for NEET (UG) 2026 does not report it. Claims on either side, including toppers' testimonials and institutes' selection counts, cannot be checked against a common baseline, so we do not repeat them here.

What the evidence does support is about method rather than setting. A 2013 review of ten common study techniques by Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing and distributed (spaced) practice as high utility, and rereading and highlighting as low utility. Those findings apply in a coaching classroom and at your desk alike. A student who tests themselves and spaces revision is using the better methods whichever route they took.

Frequently asked questions

Can I crack NEET without coaching?

Yes, many students prepare without coaching. The exam tests the NMC syllabus, which is closely based on NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks that are free to download, and NTA's National Test Abhyas app offers free mock tests. What self-study needs is structure you supply yourself: a timetable, regular tests and a way to get doubts answered.

Is coaching necessary for NEET?

No. NTA does not require or recognise coaching, and the syllabus and paper are the same for everyone. Coaching is useful if you need external structure, live teaching or a peer group; it is not a condition for appearing or scoring well.

Which has better results, coaching or self-study?

We could not find official data that compares NEET results by coaching status. Institute and testimonial claims cannot be checked against a common baseline. The research evidence is about methods: practice testing and spaced practice are rated high utility whichever setting you use them in.

Can I combine coaching and self-study?

Yes, and most coaching students do. Classes cover the teaching; your own time goes into practice, revision of weak chapters and analysing mock tests. The balance matters more than the label.

What does self-study for NEET cost?

It can be very low. NCERT textbooks are free as PDFs, National Test Abhyas mocks are free, and desktop Anki is free. Reference books, paid test series and apps add cost depending on what you choose.
